What to Expect in the Treatment Sessions

Our Dementia Care Appointments take into account the clients moods and wishes on the day and will be adapted accordingly.

We offer a care appointment with your loved one, where we provide a full service support session in the activities they enjoy doing, while expertly incorporating Cognitive Therapy and Cognitive Stimulation.

Appointments are for a min of 1 hour and include all the types of therapies we offer.

We cover the body, mind, spirit and emotions.

Sessions can be as often as required.

We offer daily, once per week. Once every 2 weeks or once per month.

The more stimulation the client has, the better the results and cognitive decline. Mood and Depression is also significantly reduced, along with the overall health and wellbeing of the individual.

You can book one off sessions or book a course of sessions.

Brief Overview of what’s included in a Typical Therapy Session:

Reminiscence Therapy

Reminiscence therapy and life story work are valuable psychotherapeutic approaches. A tired and perhaps downcast person, may be seen to have color returning to their cheeks,  a new sparkle in their eyes and laughter ringing out, with various Therapies that we  can offer.

We offer this on a one to one basis.

It is a form of non-pharmacological therapy that aims to trigger past memories, by keeping the brain stimulated. Stimulation is expertly generated according to the client and in these sessions, we will aim to unlock doors in people’s minds and access memories long since buried.

We do this by using the senses — sight, touch, taste, smell and sound. This will help individuals with dementia remember events, people and places from their past lives.

Reminiscence therapy in people with dementia, it is vital, for them to keep their brain stimulated and active in order to ensure their brain stays healthy.

Typically, a person with dementia is more able to recall things from many years ago, than recent memories, so reminiscence draws on this strength.

Reminiscence therapy and life story work which can improve and enhance the following:

  • Mood
  • Cognitive ability
  • Well being
  • Improve relationships between the Dementia individual and the people they are in contact with, such as family, friends and cares.
  • Empowerment
  • Raised Self-Esteem
  • Improved Communications
  • Sense of fulfilment and comfort as they look back on their lives with positive thoughts.
  • Depression

Sensory Interventions

Multi-sensory stimulation provides sensory stimuli to stimulate the primary senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. In our visits, we use Multi-Sensory stimulation with everyday objects, to connect with one or more of the five senses , with the aim to evoke positive feelings and increase social interactions and connections , using everyday sensory cues and familiar objects e.g. familiar foods, flowers, music.

Providing appropriate sensory stimulation for Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia has been shown in studies to decrease agitation and restlessness, as well as improve sleep. These symptoms are very common in most forms of dementia and certainly in people with Alzheimer’s, so sensory stimulation – translates into improved quality of life for everyone in the care partnership.

There is some evidence that aromatherapy may be effective in helping people with dementia to relax, and that certain oils may have the potential to improve cognition in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Research has specifically highlighted the potential benefits of the use of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) to improve cognition and mood in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and lavender oil,  to reduce occurrences of aggressive behavior in dementia.

We offer this service to any dementia patients, if they wish to utilize this type of therapy.

At the very least, this approach will improve wellbeing and leave the person feeling relaxed and pampered, which will lead to a happier and a more contented person. This ultimately will assist in promoting mental health.

There is a small amount of evidence that massage can help manage symptoms associated with dementia, such as anxiety, agitation and depression.

We again offer this service to enhance the wellbeing of the client and encourage mental health stability, which ultimately promotes our moto of: A happy person is a healthy person.

We offer hand and manicure massage using lavender oils and lemon balm.

Being Outside

Being outside stimulates the production of vitamin D, helping to maintain healthy muscles and bones. It also offers stimulation in the form of different colors, textures and natural smells and sounds.

Spending time outside and/ or in a garden has been shown to positively affect a person’s emotions and to improve their sense of well-being.
