What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep disorder that is characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep, which results in many suffers waking up feeling unrefreshed or having non restorative sleep. This results in feeling drowsy and fatigued throughout the day, which impacts negatively on daily life.

Symptoms can be vast and for anyone suffering from Insomnia, the effects they suffer may be extensive.

The Effects of Sleep Deprivation can include Heart Disease, Blood Pressure, Obesity, Diabetes, Poor hand eye co-ordination, Mood and Irritability, Problems with relationships, Physical and Mental health issues.

Sleep Deprivation is very serious and very dangerous: Sleep deprived people who are tested using a driving simulator , did as badly as someone who is intoxicated.

Without sleep, one cannot function.

NHS reports that GPs now rarely prescribe sleeping pills to treat insomnia. Sleeping pills can have serious side effects and you can become dependent on them.

Insomnia is a common complaint, but it could be related to other concerns such as stress and anxiety.We look at the whole picture of you as an individual, including Cognitive Behavioral Techniques that can improve sleep.

We also look at SAD- Seasonal Affective Disorder in your treatment process.

This is a type of depression that relates to changes in the season and results in loss of energy and moodiness, anxiety and gloominess.

The NHS & The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that SAD should be treated in the same way as other types of depression.

Signs and symptoms of SAD may include:

  • Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Having low energy
  • Having problems with sleeping
  • Experiencing changes in your appetite or weight
  • Feeling sluggish or agitated
  • Having difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty
  • Having frequent thoughts of death or suicide
  • Poor appetite
  • Weight Loss
  • Agitation or Anxiety
  • Social withdrawal
  • School or work problems
  • Substance Abuse
  • Other Mental Health Problems, such as eating disorders.

Some Background information on your Sleep Cycle

NREM sleep – Stages 1-4

Stage 1:
Start of the Sleep Cycle. This is a very light state of sleep.
Stage 2:

Lasts about 20 min. Body temperature decreases and the heart rate slow.
50-60% a night is spent in stage 2.
The Brain produces brainwave activity as sleep spindles, which are rapid bursts of rhythm activity.

Stage 3:
This is the transitional stage between deeper and lighter levels. Delta Waves begin to emerge in this state. Delta brainwaves deep and dreamless sleep
Stage 4:
This is a deep level of sleep that lasts for about 30 min -Delta Brainwaves are produce This is an important stage.
Stage 5:
This is when REM (Rapid Eye Movement Occurs) occurs- known as Dreaming
This is an important stage

REM sleep happens about 90 min after you fall asleep, which is when you dream, which is thought to be restorative.

Typically, you travel back and forth through the different stages. After Stage 4, you will usually go back to stage3, and then back to stage 2, before entering Stage 5 ( REM again)

Important facts:

Your body clock has a natural circadian clock which helps you regulate sleep. This repeats approximately every 24 hours. (Knows as circadian rhythms) This 24 hour cycle of biological processes is regulated by the external cues such as light and melatonin.

That is why we feel the need to sleep when it gets dark and feel the need to rise when it’s light.
Your sleeping habits need to change for your Circadian Clock to work effectively.

Our Treatment Process

The Treatment is delivered by a Qualified Insomnia Practitioner.

Your Therapist is CMA Registered (Complementary Medical Association) and has IAHT Membership (International Alliance of Holistic Therapists)

Sessions are usually weekly, depending on your needs and last around 50 min-1 hour.

Each Treatment plan is individualized according to your own body clock and way of life.

Treatment plans can incorporate the accessing of Theta Brainwaves – which is deeper and slower, and beneficial to your health. They are linked to improvements with immune function and is so doing help fight disease and illness.

Our treatment plans include Breathing Techniques on a conscious and unconscious level, which can be implemented straight away to facilitate a restful and restorative night’s sleep.

Sessions can include 20 min of Medically Approved Blue Light Therapy – recommended by the NHS.The positive effects will be noticed immediately in alertness, concentration and productivity.

The length of the Treatment will depend on the severity of your Insomnia and individual requirements, but many patients respond positively in a short space of time, seeing improvements in quality, as well as duration.

Our Initial assessment will allow us to understand what may be causing and maintaining the sleep problems.
